Art Tour to Sofia and Plovdiv

Thursday 11.4. (arrival 10.4. in the evening) to Sunday 14.4.2019

We invite you for the first time to an art trip to Sofia and Plovdiv! The contemporary art scene in the two Bulgarian cities has undergone an enormous development, which is mainly due to the proactive work of artists, curators, gallerists and other art workers.

After the fall of the Iron Curtain there were few contacts to the international art scene in the local contemporary art - especially the institutions were not prepared for change. The most relevant art happened outside of the official establishment. With the engagement of individual artists and curators, the exchange with and participation in international projects began in the 1990s. For a long time Bulgaria was one of the few European countries not to participate in the Venice Biennale.

Now Sofia has a museum for contemporary art, which is a part of the National Gallery. Private galleries have been present since the late 1980s and in the meantime other dynamic galleries have been added, such as the Credo Bonum Foundation Gallery and the Structura Gallery, founded by Maria Vassileva, who as a curator has contributed a great deal to the development of art in Sofia since the late 1980s. We will also visit studios and artist residencies in Sofia, which additionally contribute to the internationalization of the Bulgarian art scene. We will meet interesting protagonists of the Bulgarian art establishment: among others Lara Boubnova, director of the National Gallery, Luchezar Boyadjiev, curator and artist, who has been an important interface for internationalization since the early 90s, and Vessela Nozharova, author of the new book "Introduction to Bulgarian Contemporary Art 1982 - 2015".

In one day we will travel to Plovdiv, one of the European Capitals of Culture for 2019, and visit the current exhibitions there. In Plovdiv we will certainly meet with the gallery owner Vessela Sarieva, whose gallery has been present at international art fairs for a long time. We will travel to Plovdiv by bus on April 12, 2019 (and return to Sofia in the evening of the same day).

The detailed program that will be available before the trip will contain the exact addresses - so you will be able to join the program at any time. Our guide is Stefka Tsaneva, an excellent connoisseur of the contemporary art scene. She will be responsible for the program in English and partly in German. In the time before the trip we will offer preparatory information on Bulgarian art and architecture -books, links, etc.
