Art Tour Brno

Saturday 24 March and Sunday 25 March 2018

Lying between Vienna and Prague, with many similarities to both, Brno is a remarkable city. It offers a rich history, a strong industrial base (hosting numerous annual exhibitions and trade fairs) and something unique and particular in Europe: the "White Modern" architecture, from the years between WWI and WWII.

Two large institutions are dedicated to contemporary art in Brno - the Moravian Gallery and the House of Arts, which shine far beyond the city. Vast private exhibitors such as Fait Gallery and Wanniek Gallery show current Czech and international art, also active with presentations and theatre. Brno boasts a beautiful historic town centre, where medieval buildings juxtapose modern architecture. The examples of modern architecture - such as Villa Tugendhat - are unique in Europe and only similar in quantity and style elsewhere to Tel Aviv. Further villas and multi-family homes are found in the areas surrounding the town center. The trade fair area is equally impressive. Brno highly cherishes its modern architecture, listing it in prestigious publications and clearly marked walking tours, with its BAM System (Brno Architecture Manual) along sidewalks for better viewing and appreciation.

We will visit all of Brno's major art exhibitors, the historic town centre and neighbouring modern architecture (paying a special visit to the Hotel Avion, currently under renovation, inaccessible to the public for years), artist studios (including a picturesque artist's colony of the 1920s), Villa Tugendhat and Villa Jurkovic (tours tailored specifically to our group), as well as further distinctive buildings of the "White Modern" time.
